Why:

Extreme recess, is a nonprofit organization, which reaches out to isolated groups of children by promoting participation in physical activities that other children consistently participate in. By giving children with mental and physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in sports and physically demanding activities, these children that are rarely given the chance to shine, can see their true potential and gain confidence. This experience will empower and give children self respect necessary in order to remind children of their greatness and potential. They will learn to carry a confident attitude in the classroom, their community and help them realize that their disability cannot hinder them from reaching their dreams. Extreme Recess encourages the unique skills in all children by helping turn their adversity into opportunity. Washington D.C currently has over 12,000 children with disabilities and it is essential that we spread awareness about the importance that athletic participation has on all children, especially those with disabilities.

Special thanks to Joye Thomas (Artistic Director of Mayzsoul Inc.), Raymond Heisler, Courtney Brandenburg, Catherine Butterworth, Alexandra Gardner, Jenn Ruhl Kubilus (Operations Manager of Mayzsoul Inc.) and the Chris Collins Dance Studio!
